Numerous national, state, and local studies have determined that with increased access to public parks and trails, rates of chronic illnesses are reduced.
The CRA, City, and the West Orange Healthcare District/Foundation for a Healthier West Orange are partnering to build Healthy West Orange Wellness Park with the intent of improving overall community health factors for our residents and the local workforce. Wellness Park will activate what is today a stormwater pond through the installation of a ½ mile perimeter walking path, gathering
areas for health-related events, and four wellness stations. The park will be beautifully landscaped, including the installation of aquatic vegetation at the pond’s waterline, creating a more natural setting. Properly placed seating will provide tranquil areas for relaxation. The transformation of a stormwater pond to an urban park offering fitness opportunities will be welcomed into our community.
The West Orange Healthcare District awarded the CRA with a $2.25 million grant to construct the new park. The park will cost in the vicinity of $2.75 million and take about a year to construct. Once open, the CRA will partner with the City to conduct wellness programs. It is proven that providing physical programming, in addition to outdoor fitness parks and trails, can result in positive health impacts.
