Every drop counts. Save water, save money!

Daylight Saving Time is here and landscape irrigation has returned to the
two-day-a-week schedule.
Please keep water conservation and mind and only irrigate when your
day and time are up and when your lawn and landscaping need it! |

From the American Water Works Association:
|
|
"A safe, reliable water supply is critical to the success of any
community. It creates jobs, attracts industry and investment, and
provides for the health and welfare of citizens in ways ranging from
disease prevention to fire suppression. We often take water supply
for granted until it is threatened, either by drought, water main
breaks, or some other event. For more than 30 years, the American
Water Works Association and its members have celebrated Drinking
Water Week – a unique opportunity for both water professionals and
the communities they serve to join together to recognize the vital
role water plays in our daily lives." |
10 Conservation Tips to Remember:
|
|
- Don't run the water while brushing your teeth.
- Load the dishwasher and clothes washer to full capacity before running them.
- If washing dishes by hand, don't let the water run.
- Repair dripping faucets and leaky toilets.
- Install water-efficient appliances in your home.
- Don't over-water your lawn. Stop spoiling your turf.
- When the driveway or sidewalk needs cleaning, use a broom, not a hose.
- If you have a swimming pool, use a cover. Cut the loss of water by evaporation.
- Help preserve the quality of the available water supply by not overusing pesticides and fertilizers, avoiding flushing
medications down the toilet or sink, and disposing of hazardous materials properly.
- Place rain barrels beneath your downspouts. The rainwater can be used for outdoor plants and trees or to wash a car.

POWR was designed not only to educate the community about water
conservation, but also to inform residents about the importance
of Florida’s precious water resources. The name POWR – Protect
Ocoee’s Water Resources -- was developed to bring about a common
goal among all of Ocoee’s residents. So, every time you see the
POWR logo, remember to Protect Ocoee’s Water Resources.
The SJRWMD looks at each city’s population, growth rate,
periodic droughts, and other factors when determining the
maximum amount of water they should be drawing from the ground.
Ocoee is just one of many cities that SJRWMD is working with to
reduce its water consumption. We are using too much water. The
City of Ocoee has decided to embrace the efforts of SJRWMD. City
officials and staff want Ocoee to set the example for water
conservation in the SJRWMD. The City believes that water
conservation is one of the most important issues facing all
Florida cities and Ocoee wants to do its part by urging every
Ocoee resident and business person to do their part.
Our goal is to have each family or business reduce their
consumption by 15 percent. We hope you will take the challenge
and make the commitment to Protect Ocoee's Water Resources. We
believe if every Ocoee resident changes just one habit in an
effort to save a little water every day, we can make a
difference not only today, but for future generations.
So take the time to decide what one small habit you can change
and be part of the solution! |

The long history of rainwater collection, can be traced (in recorded
history) as far back as ancient times some 3,000 years ago (850 BC)
if not even farther. The need for water is a basic human essential
for maintaining life, without it, no civilization could have
prospered. Rainwater collection in ancient Constantinople is one of the
last megalithic structures of its kind. During the dark ages,
technologies as advanced as these however seem to have taken a
severe decline in the western world, while older less expensive
techniques persisted up until the industrial era. With the advance
of technology, time proven methods gave way to centralized systems
of water collection, with pipes and collective communal systems. If
we however, are to learn from our mistakes, we must study history
and in this way rediscover the value of rainwater collection.
Commonly used systems are constructed of three principal components;
namely, the catchment area, the collection device, and the
conveyance system. As long as water is not a problem, people don’t
really seem to care where it comes from or even how it gets in the
house, just as long as it is there and useful. This mentality of
forgetting as a whole is what must be fought, as it is through the
past that we learn to make a better and brighter future, by not
repeating the same mistakes as our forefathers. Clean rainwater
collection throughout human history has taught us time and time
again how this is possible.

Used as a secondary source of water for gardening in residential
areas, are rain barrels. The City of Ocoee is promoting the use of
cisterns and rain barrels for gardening applications. Both rain
barrels and cisterns can provide a source of chemically untreated
'soft water' for gardens and compost, free of most sediment and
dissolved salts. Because residential irrigation can account for up
to 65% of domestic water consumption, water conservation measures
such as rain barrels can be used to reduce the demand on the city's
system, especially during the hot summer months. |

New Landscaping
|
New landscaping may be watered on any day during the first thirty
(30) days after planting, but not between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. New
landscaping should be avoided during droughts. If you have new
landscaping or sod please call 407-905-3100 ext. 4009 and let us
know so that we can make a note of the date and time that the
landscaping or sod was installed in your file, which would prevent
you from receiving a "Watering Violation" notice.
